Sometimes, cookies are the only answer. Sometimes, 22 types of cookies just isn’t enough. Sometimes, gingerbread is all you need.
Sometimes, Christmas is about these kinds of things. Of gingerbread, and ninjabread, of shortbread and yoyos and taking over someone else’s oven because yours stopped inexplicably stopped working in the middle of making a batch of the above biscuits. Or cookies, if you’re American. You know the word cookie most likely came from the Dutch koekje meaning “little cake”? This is especially cool for me since I have Dutch heritage.
But sometimes, Christmas needs us to find its roots again amongst all the commercialism and competition. And not only that, but we need to find the de-sentimentalised Christmas. The Christmas that isn’t just about family and togetherness, lovejoypeaceJesus. Christmas is about more than that. Read the rest of this entry »

Christmas, in Australia, is about the heat. It’s currently wavering around 40°C today, which is epically ridiculous, especially when you have to work in a kitchen. Yuck.
However, I love a summer Christmas. A long summer holiday with presents, time to read all those books you received from your family. What could be better? It’s true that a traditional roasted dinner can be a bit much, but a summer Christmas is also a great excuse to get expensive seafood and fresh summer fruit, all in the name of celebration. I have never known a white Christmas, although I would love to someday. For now I will enjoy bare feet and air conditioning. Read the rest of this entry »

We watched it last night and I fell in love. Really, there’s not much that is more heart-wrenchingly beautiful than Bing Crosby singing White Christmas in the first scene there.

It’s a short post today because I had a PARTY on last night(yay! party!) so I’m just going to say that Christmas is about friends and family and celebration. It’s about food and presents and love and joy and hope. Peace and determination and perseverance, too. (even when you feel like a failure because you’ve already missed two posts in your month of posting).
Christmas is about being human. As human as human is. All the pains and sorrows and joys and delights of being human, the entirety of the journey that man takes in discovering God and Creation and fellow human. Christmas is about the gift of giving and the gift of recieving. Christmas is about love.

(Don’t blink.)
Yes, I’m watching Doctor Who. Something about this lanky converse-wearing pseudo-Scottish time traveller has me hooked. I don’t know what it is. Perhaps it’s his irrepressible energy. Perhaps it’s the hilarious and yet also strangely endearing alien life-forms that the writers have thought up. Perhaps it’s the idea that somewhere out there, a man in a blue box could be looking for a new companion. And that companion could be me. Read the rest of this entry »

And another late post. Since I’ve gotten home I’ve been working and it’s been hot. I’ve been watching Doctor Who and not doing much else at all. Like a holiday from my holiday. It’s been much more difficult to get up early now that I’m back in Melbourne (and I have to say that the work Christmas dinner didn’t help with that AT ALL.)
But time moves on (quickly, quickly!) and so must we, and although it’s holidays for some, others of us still have to work. But we make time for play, too, and our house is having a Christmas party this weekend.
Cue massive freak out.
Cookies, cupcakes, mini quiches. Vodka, bourbon, gin. Dishes, dishes, dishes. Party party party! Read the rest of this entry »

We’re at the halfway point between the first day of December and Christmas Day and I’m excited. I can’t wait till Christmas but at the same time I’m really enjoying the excitement in the lead up. Included in that excitement was the Great Food Blogger Cookie Swap 2012.
I signed up for the swap after hearing about it via Best Friends for Frosting (I’m pretty sure) in November. The deal is, you bake a bunch of cookies. You send 1 dozen cookies to three food bloggers (that’s one dozen each) and in return, three food bloggers send you cookies! It was so much fun making up my packages and I love love love recieving mail so getting the cookies was awesome too! Read the rest of this entry »

When the Messiah was born, the first people who found out were the shepherds in the field. The lowly shepherds, who were looked down upon in regular society, were the first to find out that their people were to be saved and not only that, that they would save the entire cosmos. The Israelites, that small, proud nation on a small spit of land at the edge of the country wouldbe the saving grace of the whole universe. Read the rest of this entry »
