I really love scones. They’re quick, they’re easy, they’re versatile and they’re absolutely delicious.
Stephanie Alexander’s sister once told her that when she heard the sound of a visitor at the gate, she should be able to get a batch of scones in the oven by the time they were at the front door. I’m fairly sure I’ve mentioned that before, but I love it so much, I’m saying it again. I don’t think I’m at that stage yet, but I can definitely make you scones for breakfast when I get back from my morning run.
Scones take next to no effort, especially if you’re using a food processor. I don’t tend to these days, as I’m living at a house that doesn’t have a dishwasher. When you’re faced with three extra dishes or one to clean, always choose one.

Clearly, I have a problem.
No, I’m not talking about my addiction to Doctor Who t-shirts or my extreme nitpickiness when it comes to the care of books. I’m not even talking about my complete inability to ignore the inappropriate possessive apostrophe in “it’s”. People, get it right: if it is a contraction of “it is”, then it needs an apostrophe. Christmas, in Australia, is about the heat. It’s currently wavering around 40°C today, which is epically ridiculous, especially when you have to work in a kitchen. Yuck.
However, I love a summer Christmas. A long summer holiday with presents, time to read all those books you received from your family. What could be better? It’s true that a traditional roasted dinner can be a bit much, but a summer Christmas is also a great excuse to get expensive seafood and fresh summer fruit, all in the name of celebration. I have never known a white Christmas, although I would love to someday. For now I will enjoy bare feet and air conditioning. Read the rest of this entry »

Our Christmas tree is up! I’m so excited. My housemates were hanging out for me to come home so we could decorate it together. I am surrounded by boxes.
I have to go over an obstacle course to get to my door.
I’m typing this on my bed because my desk is covered with stuff.
But five months after everything went pear-shaped, I finally have a place to call home.
Home’s a funny thing. Home is, famously, where the heart is, but it’s also where the people welcome you, where you can hang your hat up, where you can put your feet on the furniture and your alcohol on the windowsill. Home is where you keep your crap, literal and figurative in more than one sense. Home is where no questions are asked and also where all the deep questions are asked. Home is when you can say that you’re stuffed and ready for bed and you can just go there. Home is re-discovering old clothes and old books. Home is baking at ten o’clock at night and rearranging the furniture to suit yourself.

I was at a cafe the other day taking a break from, well, my life, and it was pretty busy so I got a seat at the counter which runs along the window, squeezed between a girl on a notebook computer and a guy drawing with a sharpie in a visual diary and
side note but I am always fascinated by people who can draw and I like to watch them. The way that people can use a pen or a sharpie or whatever and make lines on paper look good? wow. Probably because I would really be able to draw but I don’t have the discipline to make myself draw enough to get good at it. I love to do too many other things.

I didn’t really know what to title this post because although there is a recipe for chocolate cupcakes at the end, it’s not really about the cupcakes. The cupcakes are a vehicle for me to talk about stuff.
I feel like lately life has been happening to me, rather than that I am actually living life. It might have to do with the fact that I’m living in a state of limbo and my life has been turned upside down this year. I don’t know what I want to do with my life or where I’m going and so I’m filling in time by working and baking and going to parties and weddings.

I’m writing a novel.
I have always loved to write. I started this blog to write, and I made it a food blog because I love food. I love to make it and I love to share it. And National Novel Writing Month has given me that same opportunity in a completely different way.
