It’s the start of things! It’s the end of summer and the start of new beginnings. I’m excited. Are you excited?

I’m excited. I have a few tentative New Years resolutions. I don’t usually make them because I don’t like feeling guilty when they don’t work out. But I am putting out into the world some goals. Some things I would like to do this year, what I would like to happen in my life. At the same time, I’m going to be nice to myself if I don’t achieve my goals.

I know it’s almost February but now feels more like the time to be making goals and lists and plans. It’s the start of new things NOW. It’s almost the end of the holidays, the beginning of the academic year, the start of something new.

Here goes.

1: Be healthier. This involves two aspects; getting more active and eating more green stuff. I refuse to make a resolution to lose weight because a) this seems counter-productive (I can be quite wilful when I want to do things) and b) apart from my coworkers obsessing over their weight when they’re approximately two sizes smaller than me, it’s not about the weight. It’s about me wanting to explore new and exciting food, in the form of smoothies and salads and soup, and wanting to enjoy using my body and be comfortable with it.

2: Hang out here more. As in, on my blog. As in, post more, write more, make it look prettier, make it more like me. Personalise. I’m in a little bit of a blogging rut right now I want to get out of. Photograph more, write more, bake more, share more.

3: Get creative. With my life, with my blog, with my home, with my cooking. Life is a creative act, living is a creative act. I’m going to get creative with organising, with upcycling and reusing and thrifting things. I want to get a sketchpad and get back into drawing and painting again. I have a ton of sewing projects I’m super excited about.

I’ve decided to look after myself more so I can look after others more. One kind of comes with the other. My last resolutions is to find a church that I can go to consistently, that I want to turn up at, to cultivate a space inside myself for God and for spiritual growth and a space just to be.

Almond Plum Tray Bake

Adapted from Lavender and Lovage

This is a really good everyday cake type sweet that’s not too sweet (and it has fruit in it, so it’s healthy, right? Right) and easy to make!

175 g self raising flour

50g almond meal

225g caster sugar

225g butter

4 large eggs

1 tsp vanilla extract

1/4 cup milk

10 plums, stoned and cut into sixths

50g flaked or chopped almonds

Preheat oven to 180ยฐCelsius. Line a 9″x13″ baking tray with foil and grease the foil. Set aside.

Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs, one at a time, beating after each addition and scrape down the sides of the bowl. Beat in almond meal, flour and vanilla. Stir in milk and spread into baking tray.

Scatter plums and almonds over the mix. Scatter the plums lightly, as they’ll sink anyway and you don’t want them to go all the way to the bottom. It may seem like a lot of plums but I only used seven and it wasn’t enough! Bake for about 40 minutes. Let cool in the pan and slice into squares when cool enough to lift by the foil out of the pan.
